Intrepid Musuem: New York City
One of New York Cities most renound musuems, lays within, and on and old naval ship, docked in west midtown manhattan, just a short walk from Hell's Kitchen, is the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space museum. Not the typical museum with polished floors, glass cases, and benches, rather it is housed on the actual aircraft carrier USS intrepid, docked in the hudson river.
The museum has 4 levels you can explore;
-The flight deck: Where most of the aircraft are displayed, and the warehouse with the space shuttle is located.
- The hanger deck: with interactive displays, historical footage, and preserved planes.
- The third deck: Where you get a better look at the daily life of the crew members. You'll find the crew quarters, sleeping arrangements, jobs and other things.
- The lower deck: you can find food stands, military stands with pull-up bars and interactive robots, and a submarine.
On the top level( flight deck) are the planes, arguably the best part of the museum. There are over a dozen aircrafts, all with unique descriptions and features. These planes are so interesting that they often leaves people wanting more. That's why there were several specialists on the deck with signs that say, " ask me anything." The planes haven't flown in decades, but most still like they could.
One of the eye-catching stand-out planes is the Lockheed A-12. A sleek, black high-altitude aircraft that's a rare sight, even in aviation museums. It was a top-secret spy plane developed by the CIA in the Cold War. Built for the sole purpose of gathering information, flying higher and faster than anything in the sky. it's able to go over Mach 3. and only 13 A-12s were ever built.
