Racoon Island in North Miami:
Raccoon Island (Sandspur Island), located in North Miami, is a charming 15-acre haven covered in mangroves and inhabited by raccoons and tourists. While the island’s popularity means that loud music often scares the raccoons away, those who venture deep into its heart will find themselves among playful bandits who only steal grapes.
You can get there by boat tours, private charters, personal boats, kayaks, or paddle boards. I recommend bringing some sort of GPS to make sure you are going to the island of your choice. There are 2 islands, one big island with more people and easier access to the terrain, and a second smaller island which is tougher to get onto and is more challenging to climb around. But there are fewer people on the second island so you might have more luck finding raccoons there. But I didn't go to the smaller island so I can't be too sure.
After 2 laps around the big island, we finally found the raccoons. Raccoons love fruits. They enjoy feasting on small fruits like grapes and berries but will also eat other things as long as it's small enough to eat. the sweeter, the better. So, we brought grapes and bananas. they did prefer the grapes because they are smaller and easier to chew. They didn't even eat the big grapes fully.
I wouldn't worry about being bitten or contracting some diseases because raccoons are incredibly gentle and sweet. but don't try to pet them, they can touch you, but you can't touch them. if you find a mother with her young don't approach. if the mother approaches without her young, she's safe to feed. Thankfully the raccoons here are curious and friendly with people.
