mammoth cave

Mammoth Cave, a natural wonder and a pride of Kentucky, is the longest known cave in the the world today, and took decades for the natural world to form. Its vast network of underground passages and chambers continues to inspire scientists and explorers , revealing new information with each exploration.

Fun fact: Mammoth Cave is 426 miles long (685 kilometers)

Formation:

Around 10–15 million years ago, legenedary mammoth started to form. Mammoth Cave is what scientists call solution caves. Solution caves are formed when rainwater percolates through the soil and turns into a weak acid. And according to the National Park Service "This acidic water squeezes between the small cracks and layers of bedrock, such as limestone, and dissolves out a small channel in the rock for the water to flow." And over time, as the acidic water breaks down the minerals in the limestone, the cave expands, and the water starts the flow and expands it even more.

History:

The world's longest cave system has been admired all around the globe and in more than one time period. The first humans that have inhabited mamoth caves were the early native Americans. They started to explore around 5,000 years ago. And by 1200 BCE they mined "gypsum, mirabilite, epsomite, and other related minerals from the passageways of Mammoth Cave and other caves found in the region. They even left things behind for us, such as torches, shells, sandals, bowls, and even cave art. After the native Americans came the miners. Before this place was a popular destination, it was mine. But what was mined wasn't metals or diamonds; it was gun powder. Well, not exactly. It was a mineral called "saltpetre," which is an ingredient in black gunpowder. This brought money to the owners during the War of 1812. And after this early tourism came, with people exploring the cave with just ladders and ladders.
